Hadeel Ibrahim appointed to the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Humanitarian Financing

On 21 May, Hadeel Ibrahim, founding Executive Director of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, was appointed to the United Nations (UN) Secretary General’s High-Level Panel of experts to address humanitarian funding shortfalls.

The Panel will examine humanitarian financing challenges and will identify ways in which the gap between rising needs and the resources available to meet them can be closed. It will also work on generating solutions around the issues of more timely and predictable funding, as well as ways in which resources can be used more effectively.

Kristalina Georgieva of Bulgaria, Vice President of the European Commission and Sultan Nazrin Shah of Malaysia, Financial Ambassador of the Malaysian International Islamic Financial Centre, will co-chair the Panel.

Other Members of the Panel include:

  • Badr Jafar (United Arab Emirates), Chief Executive of the UAE’s Crescent Group.
  • Trevor Manuel (South Africa), Senior Advisor to the financial advisory firm Rothschild.
  • Linah Mohohlo (Botswana), Governor of the Bank of Botswana.
  • Walt Macnee (Canada), Vice Chairman of MasterCard Worldwide.
  • Margot Wallström (Sweden), Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs.
  • Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah (Sri Lanka), Secretary General of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation.

The Panel is expected to submit its recommendations to the UN Secretary General in November 2015 which will help frame the discussion at the World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016.
