The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has begun a process of capacity development in selected African partner institutions that will result in the responsibility for the compilation of the Ibrahim index being transferred to these institutions in the coming years.
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation and the London School of Economics (LSE) co-hosted a technical workshop for African researchers at the LSE campus in London. . The workshop, held from 22-29 March 2010, explored both the statistical methods used in the compilation of the Ibrahim Index of African Governance and the broader themes which underpin it, including the role of civil society in governance and development. Researchers from a number of institutions across the African continent attended including the American University in Cairo, the Centre for Democratic Development in Ghana, and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in Senegal.
The workshop is one step towards achieving the Foundation’s longer-term goal of moving the compilation of the Ibrahim Index to selected partner organisations in Africa. Speakers at the workshop included governance and statistics experts from the LSE, senior advisors to the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, and representatives of organisations that produce other prominent indices in the field. The workshop included theoretical and empirical discussions, as well as computer laboratory statistical training.
Participants were also able to provide constructive feedback to the Mo Ibrahim Foundation about potential adjustments and improvements to the structure of the Ibrahim Index.
