Working with Civil Society

Mandate Darfur

Mandate Darfur was a Darfurian-led initiative created to support representatives from across civil society to become active players in the peace process. The initiative intended to gather over 300 delegates from across Darfurian civil society to meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to discuss and build a positive and sustainable vision of peace for Darfur in order to provide new legitimacy to the peace process. The conference would have brought together the broadest coalition of Darfurian stakeholders ever assembled.

Mandate Darfur was being facilitated by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation at the request of representatives of Darfurian civil society. The Foundation's role was to foster international best practice in the process behind the conference.
Throughout the process, Mandate Darfur endeavoured to engage with the Sudanese government, the armed movements, a broad cross-section of civil society and the international community to build an unprecedented coalition of support for this initiative. Unfortunately, the Sudanese government did not permit the delegates to leave Sudan to take part in the conference.
