Working with Civil Society

Foundation visit to Accra

In April 2008, representatives from the board and prize committee of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation visited Accra, Ghana.

The Foundation delegation gave a lecture on governance and leadership at the University of Ghana, participated in the UNCTAD Global Leaders' Investment Debate, and met with policy-makers and civil society, including H.E. President Kufuor.

The lecture at the University of Ghana-Legon, was on the theme ‘Reclaiming good governance: recasting the governance debate around civil society' and was attended by approximately 300 students.

The Foundation also invited civil society representatives to discuss the specific governance challenges facing the continent. Attendees included the President of Sierra Leone, representatives from the Ghanaian government, members of the diplomatic community, civil society organisations, academics and the private sector.

African citizens are cynical about governance. There is a belief that African doesn’t have a culture of good governance. But this isn’t true. Africa has a great heritage and tradition of collaborative decision-making, and this should be communicated.
